Do I need to resize images before importing them in Adobe InDesign?

Hi

I will create three different InDesign-templates for print, in different sizes, with the same image placed. The resolution should be 300 dpi and printed on uncoated paper.

My question is if I need to resize and customize the image in photoshop (tiff format), or if I just can place the PSD-file and let Indesign do the resizing in the export to PDF? What is the best solution to get the best quality?

Of course, I prefer to use a PSD and only work with one file, and then just update the link when making changes, instead of always saving new tiffs.

But do I destroy the images by letting Indesign do the job?

Yes, also the separation if needed.

But keep in mind that Indesign will by default not upsample, only downsample.

So if the image has 100ppi effective Resolution that would not be changed (except possibly in connection with Transparency Flattening).

What is the best solution to get the best quality?

(Theoretically) you should get better results if you scaled the images and re-sharpened them for the individually specific sizes.

In your case that would mean creating three images additional to the original and, quite frankly, I myself quite often find it not worth the effort.

  1. If you place an AI or a PDF ist should not make any difference, therefore I place AI files.
  2. When you place an AI, PDF or EPS you can choose if the background is transparent or not. If the background is transparent you see the shadows of the content instead of the frame. But see next point, I recommend to place files with transparency.
  3. If you have files with transparency you can always apply any color to the frame. If it should be white, apply the color paper, so the content will not show its own transparency effects like drop shadow.
  4. In the Panel Effects you can choose if you want to apply the effect like drop shadow to the area, the content, the whole object or the stroke. You can also define the color of object and stroke.
  5. The setting of point 4 you can save in an Object Style in the Object Style Panel to apply it faster in the future. I would recommend that you do your settings once and apply it often.

Either make an inset in the paragraph style or make an offset in the frame settings (cmd+B) and save both in styles (Paragraph or Object Styles or both).

I would strongly recommend you to use one (1!!!!) single frame instead 3 as you do now.

Alternatives are: Paragraph Linke, Underline and Strike Through to accomplish it with a single frame and a single Paragraph Style with Nested Styles.)

What kind of file should be there instead of the trash?

Hi Frida,

I moved this from Photoshop to InDesign where you will get a better answer.

In InDesign you can drag-place your images to scale them (or scale them other ways). Watch the Links panel for the original ppi and the effective ppi. It’s the effective ppi that counts.

If the effective ppi is too low because you resize an image larger, it’s a problem. If you scale an image smaller and the ppi is high, you can take care of it in your pdf or print settings and pull it back down to 300 pixels per inch (ppi).

Specially for new InDesign user, merging several documents into a single one it can end up in an unwanted outcome as they do not know possible interdependencies between styles, colors and masters. Therefor I think it is more secure and simpler for them to keep existing book files and not to merge.

I agree, if they have to create new files, a book is often a overkill for them.

Footnotes in two columns

Is there an option in Indesign to set the main text as one column and have the footnotes split into 2 columns a the bottom of the page?

I have tried to:

- set text box as 2 columns

- use the SPAN COLUMNS option and span the main text into single column.

However the footnotes follow along with the main text and also span into one column.

Watch the Links panel for the original ppi and the effective ppi. It’s the effective ppi that counts.

Foe a selected image the Information Panel also displays the information.

And with an appropriate preflight profile (created with the Preflight Panel) one can check all the images (and other elements) in an indd-file for resolution and other parameters.

Placing linked file with written path to its location

Is it possible in InDesign to place a file using text path to its location?

For example – instead of using Place command / CTRL+D windows shortcut / drag & drop to place a file, you type a location path (C:\Users\user\Folder 1\Folder 2\File.pdf) in a text box or in a table cell and run a script to locate it and place it as a linked file. Also, it would be helpful if the linked file is updated after the file name or even the location is changed – instead of “…Folder 2\File.pdf”, now I would like to place “…Folder 2\File_new.pdf

Thank you!

Thank you for the response!

I have tried with and without transparency. As well as with and without color to the frame. The drop shadow applies to everything regardless of settings. I have tried having the effect set to area, content, whole object, or stroke; the outcome is still same. I have tried using object styles as well as just applying a drop shadow directly.

I also tried just making a white shape with a drop shadow to simply place behind the problem image, but for whatever reason, when I apply the drop shadow to the white shape, it automatically applies it to any other images on the spread including the problem image. If I could at least get it to stop applying the style/effect to everything on the spread then I could just use the drop shadow on the white shape and move on.

Hi Agatha:

Did you get a chance to read the posts I linked to? The second one shows you how to see if you have low res files by examining the Links panel. Let’s us know what your Links panel indicates.

you can always search for the file using the search field from the CMD D (place)  :

I dont think a script will help you with your second question as the file/folder and assest will need to be constantly watched and a data base automatically changed. If you rename a file the computer will see at as a new file not a version of "filename_original" you will have to relink or create a database and datamerge all the images. if the images are renamed or moved then you will need to update the csv accordingly and run again.

Thanks Willi and Dax. I'd rather do things the correct way and learn the functionalities of the program.

You can try this script:

Place images

And for your second request, I second Grant... not possible imho

Thanks for your answers!

I came up with one more problem regarding the sharpness of the pictures.

Since sharpness should be added to each individual size, how can I add sharpness after the PDF-export?
I read about LinkOptimizer and Elpical Claro, but is there any other solution / program to use?

Thanks for the help!

»Should« is relative here, you do not have to sharpen the images if you are satisfied with the current results.

As »the PDF-export« usually/often includes converting the images to a CMYK target space and saving them as jpgs the images included in the PDF should ideally not to be edited anymore. (The sprint-shop may re-separate with a stronger GCR to reduce print costs, but that is not up to you.)

Great for advanced users, Vinny. Not a practical solution for 95% of InDesign users!
