Re: get message to recover a library that was closed previously

Go to the folderC:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Local\Adobe\InDesign\Version [#].0\en_US\Caches\InDesign Recovery and try deleting the recovery files present in the folder.

InDesign checks the InDesign Recovery folder for information on documents that were open when it shut down, and then attempts to open these documents and incorporate any mini-saved data into them.If it will not find anything , it won't ask for any such popups.

NOTE: Only delete the recovery file in case you don't need them in future.

Did not help in my case. InDesign still hangs when working connected to our server.

Not sure just what you mean in your NOTE, delete them in case I don't need them? Do you mean Don't delete them in case I need them?

There are many many files named DBSharingShi#########, some named DBTmp#######, ProtectiveShutdownLog, and RecoveryData.

Which am I supposed to delete?

Thanks

Hi,

for stacking order with my sample see the screenshot where the Layers panel is open.
It's from right to left if you see the not aligned row of text frames:
On top of the stack is the frame to the right, then down the stack follows the centered one, finally the left one.

Hi White-RSC,

Please follow the solution provided Troubleshoot text selection issues and let me know if you still face this issue.

Thanks,

Monica Singh

Unfortunately I'm still having the issue. I opened/worked-on a few documents, and at first it seemed to work, but it wasn't long before the hanging started again. It seemed to do it *less* if that makes sense, but it's definitely still hanging if I'm connected to our network server.

For further information in case it helps, I can explain the details a bit further and maybe others have the same issues:

• If I'm connected to our network server (in this case, the "graphics" server with all our company projects), I will get the hanging/freezing to where InDesign is essentially unusable. It gives me the "beach ball" every few seconds, and it can last anywhere from 10-30 second per beach ball (very similar to the video posted a few posts ago). Documents also open much slower than if I'm not connected to the server. Even if the document is on my desktop locally, it will take 20-25 seconds (estimated) to open a document.

• If I disconnect from the graphics server (just that volume), ALL of those problems vanish. InDesign opens the same documents in seconds, and the hangups are completely gone.

Unfortunately I have to connect to the graphics server because all our files are on there (links, etc.). In the past few weeks I've been moving everything I need to my computer locally, working, and then re-uploading everything to the server when I reconnect, which is obviously a huge drag on my work day. (I work for a large company with hundreds of SKUs that move between myself and the rest of us.)

I should also point out that this started when I went to the 2017 InDesign. Possibly Mac Sierra also, as I did those roughly the same time. My coworkers have the same story.

As of now, I'll keep working with the suggested fix and see if it improves. Thank you for the help!

Exactly what's happening here with our Macs and InDesign. Someone from Adobe will call me tomorrow, I'll keep your posted.

2 users able to open same InDesign document

We have seen instances in which 2 users are able to open the same InDesign document.

The document is on a Mac file server.

The users are running InDesign CC2015 on their individual Macs.

The first user does Open Document, navigates to the server and selects the document to open.

The user gets a message that a plug-in is missing, says to ignore and the document opens.

The second user then does Open  Document, navigates to the server and selects the same document to open.

The user does not get a message about any missing plug-in and the document opens.

This does not happen if the first user does not get the missing plug-in message. In that case, the document opens, and when the second user tries to open the document, the second user cannot do so.

Is it possible the InDesign does not lock the document, or whatever it does to indicate it is in use, if a user gets a missing plug-in message, says to ignore and opens the document?

Has anyone else seen this behavior?

I'm writing a text book with 340 pages in Norwegian. I have used Indesign for many years. Now suddenly Indesign is so slow I can't work any more. None of the tips mentioned above have helped. Very disappointing to experience this.

Hi uwe.

I have absolutely no idea on how Excel macros work on a Mac... What I know is that the formulas use the French functions, so they must be replaced with local ones.

Keep on study the chartwell solution... That's cool!

Hi,

The path C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Local\Adobe\InDesign\Version [#].0\en_US\Caches\InDesign Recovery  has the following kind of files:

1. dbt file: that stores mini saved data used in document recovery

2. RecoveryData: the list of all InDesign open documents when the Application crashed

3. protective shutdown logs

4. Settings file

The message you see on launching InDesign CC2014, specifically is to "postpone the recovery" which appears when InDesign cannot find the document while recovering, since it was either deleted or moved from its location. The three options you see in the alert box, control if you will see this alert again or not.(from InDesign manual)

  • Yes The next time you start InDesign, it will try to recover this document again. Choose this to continue the recovery of the remaining documents but leave the document listed in the alert on the list of documents in the RecoveryData file.
  • No  InDesign won't try to recover this file again.Choose this to continue the recovery of any remaining documents but remove the document listed in the alert from the list of documents in the RecoveryData file(please see 2nd file type listed above).
  • Cancel The next time you start InDesign, it will try to recover all documents to stop the recovery process for all documents. again.

I believe clicking on the "No" option until you stop seeing the alert box, should be an easy way to resolve your problem.

Thank you for identifying the 4 kinds of files in the Recovery folder.

I wasn't completely clear in my initial post because clicking Yes or No yields no results. I could click each 50 times and the message box just stays there. I have to click Cancel to be able to use the program, and because Cancel is selected, the next time I launch InDesign the message box appears again (vicious cycle).

Now, I have tried deleting the InDesign SavedData and Reset in Reset in Windows/Workspace in different orders, rebooted, and finally I can launch CC14 and not receive the message. I just don't which order actually worked.

Thanks

I can't answer your question, but it seems to me that even if the file-locking mechanism was working perfectly, having two people taking turns making edits to the same document is asking for trouble.

It may be that there is a process that could avoid the necessity of more than one person touching the main InDesign file during any given version change. If you will describe your process, you may get some ideas from users here on ways to have a only one user altering the main file.

InDesign degrading file

$

I have numerous files that were created in July 2016 (pre InDesign 2017 version). The files were printing fine as my company has drastically decreased our printed qtys. Normally, I open the files (and don't even save) to run 100 print every 2-3 months. I noticed our printer was slowly becoming off on the color, but it's not a high-end printer so I was ok with the end result. Until this week - the graphics in my InDesign file that are set at 25% black are printing with a green tint (see bottom of attached image - sorry color difference is more apparent in person that through a cell phone camera). After having my printer service tech here for 5 hours, his conclusion is that the InDesign file is degrading just from being opened and printed.

1) Can a InDesign file degrade just from opening it and not saving?

2) I opened a new InDesign file, copied my content from my old file and pasted it on the new (InDesign 2017). The color problem corrects BUT now my imported Illustrator files print pixilated (see the text under the Flag on the right side of image - the links are not broken and when viewed at high quality, the illustrations are crisp on screen) and I have a phantom square that appears on a graphic (there is not an unused text or image box hidden in that spot).

3) I saved my original file (originally created in 2016) and the new file I created yesterday as an IDML (hoping to remove any corrupt coding). When I print, the same errors occur with both files.

Has anyone experienced this and know how to correct it?

It appears that if the first user does NOT get a message about a missing plug-in, when the second user tries to open the same document, the second user gets a message that says the document cannot be opened because it is in use.

InDesign is being used at a newspaper and at times one user needs to open the (single page) document and at time another user needs to open it.

Indesign files when opened generate a .idlk file at the same location which alerts the indesign that the file is already open and locks that file to open on some other instance of inDesign. Similarly, when you close the file it automatically deletes the .idlk file generated.

Just look if that is generated in both the cases. Ideally when the .idlk file is present it won't allow two users to open the file at the same time.

Open your pdf in acrobat and then file - save as other - reduced size pdf

Choose for example Acrobat 9.0 and later...

Info from adobe site:

...

If you’re certain that all your users use Acrobat DC or Adobe Acrobat Reader DC, limiting compatibility to the latest version can further reduce file size....

Ok?

InDesign is being used at a newspaper and at times one user needs to open the (single page) document and at time another user needs to open it.

Is one user doing layout, and the other editing the text? If so, InCopy would be a good solution.

If you have designers doing ads to put on the page, they could do them as separate InDesign documents that could be placed. If the ads needed editing, this could happen without opening the main document, and they would update when it was next opened.

Search and replace using wildcards found and replace with what was found?

Hello, and thank you in advance for helping me if you can.  I have a 700+ page document and I need to search out ^9-^9 and have it replace it with the digits found but change the - to  –.  Is that possible?  I cannot request just the change from -  to – because some of them need to remain as they need changing only in certain circumstances.  There have often been times I need to search things like this (even with ^$) and have it use the wildcard feature to find but somehow request that it replace those wildcards with the same thing that was found.  Obviously I am not an InDesign guru, so I apologize for that and any of the novice language I have used..  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Best Wishes,

Maggie

Insert Date Here Selection Button? How to??

I have just switched to InDesign, instead of Publisher, which I must have used for 20 years...  for all my forms, and machine labels... for my business.

I am creating an interactive pdf form... where I want a button:  which when you click it, it will allow the manager, using the form; to select the proper date for deliveries that week... from a popup calendar of the current month... and if the wrong month, be able to scroll to the next month and select.  Sort of like we do in Google Sheets for selecting the date?

Thanks in advance for any help, as I cannot find anything relative to this?
