Thanks for the help! Somehow the last message I wrote didn't go through...
I checked out the OpenType fonts and used alternate parenthesis- the issue is better because it's actually centered in the font, but the frame still doesn't fit appropriately. I did check Optical Margin Alignment and it is unchecked. (I just realized screenshot doesn't have auto height, but when auto height is checked the frame goes directly to the baseline/bottom of zeros like the other screenshot).

As for the FontAwesome icons, that's a good idea! It'll be a lot more work to actually change the icon, but at least I won't have to try and guess alignment by each and every pixel.
Still looking for an option to align things in the center of a text frame...honestly if you can convert type to an outline Indesign should be smart enough to tell where the actual top and bottom of things are and not just use a preset height from the baseline...
Anyone know of a script or feature that would allow me to do this? Thanks!
