I agree with John, it's almost always better to set font name, style, size, etc. through using character and paragraph styles.
One problem with using the Selection tool for setting font name, style, etc. is that ONLY works for a single frame at a time.
If you have two or more linked frames selected, the controls are grayed out.
You can always set font attributes when you have the Type tool selected.
