If you try to open files from previous version in a new one it open with the word (converted) next to the file name, and when you click the save indesign open the save as dailog box.

Neither of the shapes have fill. Wait! I thought that neither of these had fill, but the one I can manipulate has fill and when I added fill to the "after' shape I could manipulate it as I normally...

No problem. On that unfilled shape you can grab the center spot to move it, or grab anywhere on the edge except a control handle.
