I tried that, but it turns out the problem was that I didn't notice it was stopping at uncapitalized words & sentences. Once I changed the spelling preferences, that issue went away.

Are you sure you are using the shape tools and not the frame tools (the ones with an X in them)? Frame tools always default to no stroke or fill.
