Can't do anything on InDesign page

I have installed InDesign CS6. I also listened to and read four tutorials on how to use the product.

The toolbar I have is different from the toolbar in the CS6 tutorial. I do not have a T for test. Also, the product does not tell me what the toolbar icons are for when I hover over them.

I also am able to draw boxes on the InDesign page for placing text, but the boxes do not stay there. I can draw them with the mouse but as soon as I let up on the mouse, the boxes disappear.

So I cannot place any text or photos on the InDesign page.

Please help!
