As you say - you have no control over end users using different versions of Acrobat. There's a myriad of problems here
- Some view PDFs in browsers, where Chrome, Firefox, IE, etc. all have their own version of PDF reader - which doesn't support all the tricks that newer versions of Acrobat have
- You have no control over people that open it in 3rd party browsers, like Mac Preview, or other PDF readers that are not supplied by Adobe
I think it's best to provide a link to the latest version of Acrobat along with the PDF you are distributing with a note saying "This PDF is best viewed in Acrobat 10.1.6".
The only other option I can think of is to provide a simple Text Only link that people can click on.
Without seeing the file and what way you have constructed the button it's hard to give a response that gets you results.
